Mary Brunson

Mary Brunson age 96, passed away on August 1, 2020. She was born September 10, 1923 in Ellisville, Miss. She was the youngest of three children born to Bertie Collins Thornton and George Brooks Thornton. Mary grew up in Ellisville, Miss. where she attended school, graduating from Ellisville High School with honors and the University of Southern Mississippi with a degree in Home Economics. She taught Home Economics in Coahoma County, Jones County and Gulfport School District at Bayou View Junior High.



She was a Home Economist with the Mississippi Power and Light Company in Grenada, Miss. It was there that she met and married William Edgar “Ed” Brunson, who was affiliated with the Southern Bell Telephone Company in Greenwood, Miss. The family later resided in Gulfport, Miss.

Mary was a member of Trinity of United Methodist Church in Gulfport, and was active in the UMW, the Trinity Quilters Club, the September Club, Wesley Sunday School, and the Green Thumb Garden Club.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and her husband, William Edgar Brunson.

Mary is survived by her three children: Bill (Angela) Brunson of Grenada, Miss.; Mike (Hank) Brunson of Biloxi, Miss.; and Ann (Mark) Lanier of Gulfport, Miss.; her 4 grandchildren: Beth (Derrel) Wilson of Gulfport, Miss.; Brook (Ben) Burnham of Madison, Miss.; Mary Lauren (Dave) Porter of Madison, Miss.; and Brad Lanier of Oxford, Miss.; and 5 great-grandchildren.

The family would like to give our most sincere thanks and appreciation to the members and staff of Seashore Highlands for their outstanding care and compassion.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, August 5, 2020 at Ellisville Cemetery, Ellisville, MS. RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Rd. Gulfport is serving the family.
