Ian Shearer

Gulfport

Maj. Shearer, Ian C., U.S. Army Retired, 86, of Gulfport, went home to be with the Lord on January 11, 2021 at Memorial Hospital of Gulfport after a lengthy illness.

Mr. Shearer was preceded in death by his father, Andrew Shearer, his mother, Edith Shearer, his stepmother, Alice Shearer and his son, Scott Shearer.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Janice Cranston Shearer; his daughter, Kathy Phipps of Oak Ridge, TN; his son Robert Shearer (Debra) of Hudson, WI; his daughter-in-law, Janine Shearer of Merritt Island, FL; his two grandsons, Jake Shearer (Fiorella) of Melbourne, FL and Michael Shearer of Orlando, ,FL, and his beloved dog and special friend, Andi.

Mr. Shearer was born on March 27, 1934 in Camden, NJ.

He attended the Gulf Coast Military Academy, Long Beach High School and Troy State University.

Mr. Shearer served in the United States Army twenty-three years and spent two tours in Viet Nam as a reconnaissance pilot. During his first tour he flew fixed wing planes and during the second, he flew helicopters. Among other things, he was awarded the Bronze Star for his heroic efforts. He spent the remaining years of his service as a helicopter instructor pilot at Fort Rucker, AL. He retired in 1974.
After retirement from the Army, Mr. to Gulfport, Mr. Shearer worked at Mobile Medic Ambulance Company until he went to work for the State of Mississippi’s Employment Department as a Veteran’s Specialist until his retirement after 20 years.

He spent the remainder of his years at home with his wife and his dog, Andi. He enjoyed reading, listening to music and working around the house and in his “happy place”, the back yard. He was happiest when all the kids and grandkids visited.

The family would like to thank the staff at Stone County Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Wiggins and Memorial Driftwood Nursing Home in Gulfport for their loving care and compassion. Interment will be a private ceremony at Biloxi National Cemetery with full military honors.
