Herbert Struss, Jr.

Herbert W. Struss, Jr., age 87, passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2020 in Gulfport. He was born in 1932 in Astoria, NYC. Mr. Struss joined the Army National Guard of NY at 15 ½ and then transitioned to the Army Air Corps and United States Air Force. He served as a Radar Technician after WWII stationed in Germany and Labrador. He became a Master Instructor of Electronics and retired in 1970 as Technical Sergeant with 22 ½ years of service at age 39. It was during this time at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi he met and married Theresa Page his wife of 59 years. After the service he joined the McGraw-Hill Publishing Company where he sold electronics engineering self-study courses and was honored with Salesman of the Year. He then became an entrepreneur opening several coast businesses including Herbie’s Hot Dogs, Capitol Bicycle Shops, and The Ceiling Fan Store. He was very active in the Lutheran Church serving as Treasurer, Finance Secretary, and Lay Minister. He founded The Good Shepard Scholarship Fund, a district-wide fund for Christian Educators. His enjoyed reading, especially history, drawing, oil painting, camping, fishing, and collecting stamps, coins, and National Geographic magazines.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert W. Struss and Ida Karlsen Struss.

He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Theresa Page Struss; children, Richard Struss (Joyce), Linda Byrd (Mike), William Struss (Belinda), and Mark Struss (Dawn); grandchildren, Laurel Struss, Jonathan Byrd (Sayo), Stephen Byrd (Hayleigh), Ryan Struss, Evan Struss, and Brandon Struss; great-grandchild, Jenna Byrd; cousin, Helge Karlsen of Stavanger, Norway.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2020 from 12:00PM until 1:30PM at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 274 Beauvoir Road, Biloxi. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 28, 2020 at 1:30PM in the funeral chapel. Burial will follow the service at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens with military honors. Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic and the State Board of Funeral Service mandates only 50 people can attend the funeral and visitation. All guest must wear face masks.
