Wilma Dene Matthews Pope, age 104, of Gulfport, Mississippi, passed away on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at Gulfport Care Center.
Mrs. Pope was born into a large and loving family and lived a long life defined by devotion to her family, steadfast faith, and quiet strength. A career homemaker, she took great pride in creating a warm and welcoming home. She had a natural talent for interior design and carried herself with grace and style throughout her life. Wilma was known for her independence, firm yet kind spirit, generosity, and gentle wit.
Her family was her greatest joy. She treasured time spent with her children, grandchildren, and the many generations that followed. She enjoyed gardening, watching birds, and shopping, and she delighted in presenting herself beautifully each day. Her life reflected endurance, faith, and deep family roots.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Dews Pope; her brothers, Neal and Dexter Matthews; her sisters, Lou Donald Dudley, Robbie Nell Weems, Lonnie Frank Armstrong, and Beth Martin; and her grandson, Michael Lamar Lindsey.
She is survived by her daughter, Judith Pope Lindsey (Earl Cuevas); her son, John Pope (Sheila); her grandchildren, Karl Lindsey (Janice), Jamie Lindsey King (Keith), Gail Lindsey (John), Scott Lindsey (Tanya), John Pope Jr. (Tennille), and Walt Pope; and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation will be held Monday, February 23, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, MS 39503, with the funeral service beginning at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Gulfport.
Mrs. Pope will be remembered for her strength, grace, and the enduring love she shared with her family.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and staff at Gulfport Care Center and Vital Caring Hospice for their compassion and support.
