Wilma Eleanor McGhee, 91, died peacefully on Friday, March 15, 2013, at her home in Gulfport. A longtime resident of Gulfport, she moved to the Coast as a young adult. Wilma was born in Bluefield, West Virginia, and was the older sister of Robert E. (Bob) McGhee.
After graduating from Bluefield College, she served as a WAVE (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) during WWII. The WAVES, a division of the U.S. Navy, consisted entirely of women. Wilma spent most of her career as a medical technologist at the Veterans' Administration Hospital in Biloxi, until her retirement. She was an avid cook - famous for her macaroni and cheese - and also loved flowers and gardening.
Wilma is survived by her niece, Anne McGhee Curry (Robbie) of Washington, D.C., nephew Bill McGhee of Gulfport, great niece Ashley McGhee and great nephew Michael McGhee, both of Gulfport, and great nephew Joseph McGhee of Baton Rouge, La. She is also survived by her friend and caretaker, Elizabeth K. (Liz) McCree of Gulfport. Wilma was preceded in death by her brother Bob, and their parents, DeWitt T. and Mildred M. McGhee.
Services for Wilma McGhee will be at 10 a.m. on March 21, 2013, at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road in Gulfport. Visitation will be from 9:30-10 a.m., and a private entombment at Floral Hills will follow the service.
