William Laurence Tanner

William Laurence Tanner, age 97, a native of Edna, AL and a resident of Gulfport, passed away peacefully in his home on October 13, 2016.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Juanita Jackson Tanner; his parents, Frank and Lenora Eunice Tanner; a brother, Eugene ""Blue"" Tanner, and two sisters, Irene Tanner and Merlyn Tanner.
He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Tanner Bernheim, of Jackson, MS; his granddaughter, Christina Bernheim Siddens and her husband James 'Wesley' Siddens of Selma, AL; his nieces, Deborah Bucciantini and her husband Chris and Faye Fancher; and numerous other relatives and friends.
After graduating from Butler High School in Edna, he studied at the Gulf Radio School in New Orleans, LA. He later joined the Army Air Corp where he served in World War II. He then worked at Keesler Air Force and retired after 31 years in civil service. He loved fishing and woodworking and was an avid University of Alabama fan.
One of his most cherished and priceless memories was being a part of a group of veterans honored on the Gulf Coast Honor Flight to Washington, DC.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Gulfport where he served on church's Administrative Board and other official capacities throughout the years.
Our family would like to thank the caring staff of Gentiva Hospice and Stay at Home Health. Our family very much appreciates the special care given by Mary Moody and longtime friend and physician, Dr. Richard Tilley.
The family requests memorial donations be made to the First United Methodist Church of Gulfport, 2301 15th Street, Gulfport, MS 39501.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, October 18, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church of Gulfport where friends may visit from 10:00 AM until the service. Burial with military honors will follow in Floral Hills Cemetery.
