On March 29, 2020 CWO-4 William J. Hill, USMC retired, reported to his final duty station. A resident of the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Gulfport, Mississippi since 2014, he passed peacefully under the care of the dedicated nursing staff of Valor Hall and with the assistance of the nurses of Singing River Health System’s Hospice of Light.
Bill was born on October 26, 1926 in Jefferson City, Missouri, the only child of Max and Elva Hill. In November of 1942, at the age of 16, he enlisted in the Marine Corps to serve in World War II and began what would be a 30 year career in service to his country. During this tenure he served in the Pacific Campaigns of World War II, The Korean War, and three tours during The Vietnam War. He rose through the Marine Corps ranks and in 1973 retired with the final rank of Chief Warrant Officer – 4.
His life after the Marine Corps was filled with travel, friends, golf and reading. A certified handyman, he took great pride in working on repairs and projects around his homes and for friends and neighbors who needed a helping hand. Rare was the task he could not complete for his buddies, neighbors or his family. Golf was the great passion in his life and he could always be found on Sunday afternoons watching that week’s tournament. The high point of his golfing game was when he and his foursome won the Georgia-Florida Golf Classic at Jekyll Island in 1990.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and former wives Helen Hunt and Mary Hower. Surviving Bill are son Jack Hill (Teresa), daughter Terry Bogenrief (Cherry), and grandson, Todd Bogenrief (Nadine).
