Dr. Walter T. Taylor, 85, died August 14, 2015 of prostate cancer, in Gulfport, Ms.
He leaves his wife of 59 years Word Guild Taylor of Gulfport and Clarksdale, Ms., and five children: Word Backstrom; Dr. Walter T. Taylor, II; Dr. Clint Taylor; Will Taylor; and Guy Taylor. Walter has 13 grandchildren including: Taylor, Bronwyn and Zack Backstrom; Travis, Holman, and Skylar Taylor; Miles, Grant, Elliott and Nathan Taylor; Maegan Brass, and Tres and Brady Taylor, as well as two great-grandchildren: Walter and Archie Brass.
Walter was born in Como, Ms., to Arthur and Corinne Taylor. He was the third and youngest son, after brothers Arthur Taylor, Jr. and William S. Taylor.
As a teenager, Walter often helped run the family drugstore and lumber store in Como. He attended the University of Mississippi, Class of 1955, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He met his bride Word on a blind date while a student at Ole Miss. Upon graduation, Walter entered the U.S. Air Force as a 2nd Lt where he served as a Chemist stationed at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola, FL. Walter then entered the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in Jackson, Ms, where he graduated and was licensed in 1960 to practice Internal Medicine. Walter and Word briefly lived in New Orleans, La, and Savannah, Ga, where he did his Residency in Savannah and a Fellowship in Cardiology at Ochsner Hospital in New Orleans, before settling in Clarksdale, Ms.
Walter enjoyed playing tennis, and was an avid sportsman, outdoorsman, as well as full-time gardener, raising hundreds of exotic plants and flowers including rare orchids. Walter did not meet a tree he could not identify. He was a member of the Biloxi Rotary Club, and was actively involved with his church, the First United Methodist Church in Gulfport, Ms.
A Celebration of Dr. Taylor's life will be held at 11 am Monday, August 17, 2015, at First United Methodist Church, 2301 15th Street, Gulfport, MS 39501. Friends may gather with the family from 10:30 AM - 11AM.
