Walter Ray Hammons, born February 1, 1940, in Long Beach, MS went home to be with his Lord and Savior on January 26, 2025. He was the beloved son of Robert Franklin Hammons and Bertha Mae Allen. Walter Ray was raised in Long Beach by his father and loving stepmother, Mertis Anita Beech.
Walter Ray was preceded in death by loving wife of many years, Tommye Joyce Ellzey, his parents, and siblings, Ruby Nell Hammons, Bobby Hammons, Richard Lassabe, Jimmy Lassabe, and Bennye Lassabe. He is survived by his brother, Jackie (Kathy) Hammons of Long Beach, MS, sister-in-law, Clara Ellzey of Bentonia, MS, and children, Kim Hammons of Wiggins, MS, Denise (Johnny) Gipson of Wiggins, MS, and Pam (Paul) Nault of Pass Christian, MS.
Walter Ray leaves behind a legacy of family, and his grandchildren will forever cherish his memory: Kerri Fairley, DeShea Cooper, Cassie Cooper, Amanda (Calvin) Robertson, Courtney (Drew) White, Logan Nault, Jerrid Nault, and Jaden Nault. He is also survived by great-grandchildren, Maggie, Ethan, Kailyn, Julian, Tristan, Cooper, Raymond, Lennon, Lula, Carson and Dawson, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Over his lifetime, Walter Ray held many jobs and was known by many names. In his early years, he was called Ray, W.R., Walt, or even "Bull," but as the years went on, he became Daddy, then PawPaw Ray, and eventually Papa. Walter Ray proudly served six months in the Army, followed by ten years in the National Guard. A dedicated and hardworking man, he worked with the family business moving houses, and he was a member of Local Union 624 for 40 years as an operating engineer. In addition to his union work, he owned and operated his own trucking company, further showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit and work ethic. Driving along Highway 90, he would often proudly point out buildings he helped construct, such as Edgewater Mall, the Coliseum, and many of the casinos. From a tower crane to a backhoe, Bull liked to boast that he could operate them all—and he could.
While W.R. worked tirelessly to support his family, he also knew how to savor life. A passionate Ole Miss Rebels fan, he especially admired the Manning boys, starting with Archie. On weekends, he was often found on the dance floor or even on stage, singing his favorite classic country songs. His daughters fondly recall him as a graceful dancer who taught them how to glide effortlessly across a sawdust-covered floor. He also had a love for horse racing and enjoyed the thrill of cheering on his horses at the track. Summers were spent on the Wolf and Biloxi Rivers, where Walt enjoyed boating with family and friends, soaking in the beauty of the Gulf Coast waterways.
Walter Ray was a devoted Baptist who faithfully led worship songs at Tuxechena Baptist Church and later at Unity Baptist Church, where he instilled a loved for gospel music in his daughters’ hearts. He would always tell the congregation not to worry if you couldn’t carry a tune on earth because everyone will be able to sing in heaven.
Known for his strong work ethic, vibrant personality, unwavering dedication to his family, and passion for Ole Miss football and Ford trucks, Walt left an unforgetable mark on everyone who knew him. Though his absence leaves a void, his warmth, love, and cherished memories will forever fill the hearts of those he leaves behind.
Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance to celebrate Walter Ray’s life and pay their respects at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 19130 Commission Road, Long Beach, MS, beginning with visitation on Wednesday, January 29, 2025 from 6-8 pm, and a funeral service on Thursday, January 30, 2025 at 11 am, followed by a procession to the Allen Cemetery for graveside services.
