Virgile Clemence "Vegi" Stanley passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday morning, January 22, 2017, at the age of 86. Immediately prior to her death, she was able to spend quality time with her family at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport.
Vegi was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and was raised in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi where she graduated from St. Joseph Academy. She attended Ole Miss where she met Harvey Samuel "Duffy" Stanley who became her husband in 1949. She was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority.
During their early years of marriage, they lived in four states and managed to have a child in almost every one. Jan, their eldest daughter was born in Georgia, Cindy in Texas and Gay and Trey in Louisiana. In 1957, they moved to Gulfport and settled there with their family. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church where she was an active member and attended regularly. She was also a member of the Gulfport Yacht club.
Anyone who knew Vegi, knew how important her faith and family where to her. She was a loving wife who cared for her husband until his death in September 2015. She was the epitome of a great Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother with her wonderful stories, delicious home cooked meals and attention to the details of raising her children and providing a nurturing home for them. She was a gracious Southern lady, who was the hostess to many people at her elegant dinner parties and gatherings. Everyone was a special guest when they were present in her home.
She has passed her brilliant spirit on to her survivors who include her four children, Janis Stanley Anderson (Tom), Cynthia Stanley Johnson, Gay Stanley Mayeux and Harvey Samuel "Trey" Stanley, III (Kitty); her five grandchildren, Fortune Jaubert "Bear" Alexander (Annette), Ira Eugene Gaddy, IV (Jocy), Jessica Stanley Ross (Joel), Jayme Lynn Stanley and Leslie Clemence Mayeux; her two great grandchildren, Gabriella Grace Alexander and Joel Thomas Ross, Jr., her daughter-in-law, Pam Havens Stanley and her brothers-in-law, Wade Hampton Stanley and Dr. Buddy Holmes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey Samuel "Duffy" Stanley, Jr., her parents, Narcisse Mark Dick and Virgile Dick and her grandson, Harvey Samuel "Sam" Stanley, IV.
The family is so very grateful for the loving attention and care their Mother received at Seashore Highland Assisted Living and Memorial Hospital at Gulfport. The family is also extremely appreciative to Marcie Brown, her devoted caregiver and friend, and to Molly Locke, her housekeeper for over 50 years.
There will be a celebration of her life at Trinity United Methodist Church at 3:00 pm on Saturday, January 28, 2017, with graveside services immediately following at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Gulfport. Prior to the church service, the family will begin receiving friends in Trinity United Methodist Church's parlor beginning at 1:30 pm.
