Tom J. Stockman, Jr., age 80, of Diamondhead, passed away on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Nellie Stockman, Sr.; his wife, Sandy Stockman; and his sister, Pam Maples.
Tom is survived by his loving wife, Susan Stockman; his children, Tom J. (Callie) Stockman, III, Dominic Palisi, II, Olivia Palisi, Alyssa Palisi and Angelina Palisi; two nieces, Elizabeth M. Clark (Dan), and Melissa Maples; and one nephew, David Maples, along with many cousins.
Tom was born and raised in Southern California, where he graduated from high school. Following graduation, he proudly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and honorably served his country for two years, earning a Purple Heart for his service.
After his military career, Tom began a long and distinguished career in civil service with the Los Angeles Police Department. During his time with the LAPD, he demonstrated extraordinary courage, dedication, and commitment to serving and protecting others.
Among his many honors and commendations, Tom was awarded the Police Star for initiative and courage in the face of extreme danger after rescuing a citizen from a burning vehicle. He also received a Class B Commendation for his valor during the May 17, 1974 confrontation between Los Angeles police and the Symbionese Liberation Army, one of the most significant and intense gun battles ever involving a local American police agency. Tom was also commended for his professional response and assistance in the rescue of two Griffith Park rangers who were being held at gunpoint, as well as for outstanding investigative work that led to the arrest of a suspect in the “Car Key Rapist” crimes. In recognition of his exceptional dedication to duty, the department also commended Tom for not using any sick leave for ten consecutive years. He also received a retirement letter signed by President Ronald Reagan, a fitting recognition of a lifetime devoted to service.
Tom was a member of the Los Angeles Police Department SWAT team and continued his commitment to serving others throughout his life. Following his law-enforcement career, he worked in security for Bank of America and as a dealer at Jubilee and Grand Casinos. His desire to help others continued through his work as an aid worker with Samaritan’s Purse and MEMA.
Outside of his career, Tom found joy in the simple things in life. He loved gardening, cooking, playing golf, and watching sports. He enjoyed spending time with the people he loved and had a wonderful sense of humor that could brighten a room.
Tom lived a life defined by courage, service, love, and devotion. His legacy is not only found in the lives he protected and the honors he received, but in the family, friends, and communities he touched along the way. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
While Tom’s accomplishments as a Marine and SWAT officer were remarkable, those who knew him best will remember him for something even greater: the love, kindness, generosity, and humor he shared with others. He was a devoted husband and father who cared deeply and endlessly for his family. He was also a loyal friend and a person who believed in helping his community and making a difference in the lives of others.
