Teresa Carol Burton

July 10, 1959 — May 17, 2025

Long Beach, Mississippi

It is with great sadness that the family of Teresa Carol Burton announces her passing at home, where she peacefully went to be with her Lord and Savior on the morning of May 17, 2025. Her loving husband, Richard, and their dog, John Wesley, were by her side as she transitioned from this life. Teresa was a devoted and loving wife, sharing 34 wonderful years of marriage with Richard.

Born on July 10, 1959, in Lake Charles, Louisiana, Teresa was the daughter of Tommy Harold Maddox (USAF Ret.) and Joyce Maddox. When Teresa was just one year old, the family relocated to Orlando, Florida, before moving to Laurel, Mississippi (Richard’s hometown) around 1961. They eventually returned to the Gulf Coast, where Teresa attended St. Martin High School in the Jackson County School District. A later duty assignment brought the family to Vandenberg AFB in California, where they lived for two years.

Teresa returned to the coast to attend the University of Southern Mississippi, where she earned her undergraduate degree. She later went on to earn both a master's and a doctorate in Educational Administration.

Education was Teresa's true passion. She began her career in Special Education and ultimately transitioned into administration, and she spent 28 years making a significant impact. Her career began with the Harrison County School District, followed by her role as Technology Director for the Pass Christian School District. Teresa’s vision, talent, and drive were recognized by Superintendents Dr. Philip Terrell and Dr. Sue Matheson, who supported her in implementing cutting-edge digital technology. Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Teresa played a pivotal role in guiding the district's recovery and restoring the technology infrastructure that would support the district's continued excellence. Thanks in part to her leadership, the district was able to maintain its highest state rating of Level 5. Although she retired after 28 years of service, Teresa never stopped teaching and learning, continuing to share her knowledge and wisdom with others.

A passionate believer in spreading God’s Word, Teresa taught the Women’s Bible Study class at First Methodist Church Long Beach every Tuesday morning. She dedicated her Mondays to studying and preparing for her class, creating engaging lessons, games, and quizzes that made learning about the Bible enjoyable. Her love for her faith and her ability to connect with others made her a beloved teacher, both in her professional life and in her ministry.

Teresa’s love of life and people was evident in everything she did. She loved to travel and made countless new friends during her adventures. She also loved to paint and created beautiful works of art reflecting the natural beauty of the Gulf Coast. She was known for her kindness, generosity, thoughtfulness, optimism, and boundless joy. Everyone who met her was touched by her warmth and sincerity. Teresa lived her life fully, embracing each moment with a deep faith and the belief that one day she would be reunited with her Lord.

Teresa is survived by her devoted husband, Richard; her parents, Tommy and Joyce Maddox; her brother, Rick Maddox Sr. and his wife, Shirley; Niece, Michelle; Nephew, Ricky Jr.; and Great-nieces, Lillian and Lucille Maddox. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, and her memory will live on in the hearts of those whose lives she touched.

A service to celebrate Teresa’s life will be held at First Methodist Church Long Beach on Saturday, June 28, 2025, where we will honor her legacy, share cherished memories, and provide an opportunity for family and friends to pay their respects and celebrate the remarkable life of Teresa Burton.
