Stephen W. Mauffray, Sr., age 90, of Long Beach, passed away on Wednesday, October 30, 2013.
Mr. Mauffray was a long-time resident of Long Beach and attended Divine Grace Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Catherine Ladner Mauffray, infant son, Cyril Joseph Mauffray, parents Claude Mauffray and Elizabeth Garriga Mauffray, Gloria Horlock, Woodrow Mauffray, Ulman Mauffray, Claude (Peck) Mauffray, Verdie Brumfield, Wilson Mauffray, Edith May Thibeaux, Donald Mauffray, and Conrad Mauffray. He is survived by five children, Pennie Turner, Judy LaFontaine (Al), Stephen Mauffray, Jr. (Vickie), Beverly Collins (Wayne), and Belinda Mate (George); 13 grandchildren, Brandi Turner, Sherri Robbins, Angie Lott, Mendi Roberts, Jody Nix, Rachel Slocum, Amanda Smith, Stevye Murray, David Alexander, Daniel Alexander, George Mate, Joey Mate and Jeremy Mate; 20 great-grandchildren; and Beep Beep his spoiled dog.
Mr. Mauffray retired from the Veterans Administration Hospital in Gulfport with 34 years of service. While working at the VA he and his son also provided garbage service to the Long Beach area which resulted in lasting friendships with his customers. He was a veteran of World War II having served with the 3rd Army Division in Belgium and fighting in the Battle of the Bulge which he received two battle stars.
In October 2012, Mr. Mauffray visited the World War II Memorial in Washington with the MS Gulf Coast Honor Flight.
He was a wonderful husband and father, but most importantly his grandchildren consider him their hero, idol and most of all the best pawpaw in the world.
The family would like to send a special thanks to Rachel Slocum, the doctors and nurses at Fresenius Medical Care (Diamondhead), Camellia Home Health and Hospice employees and the nurses on the fifth floor of Memorial Hospital for the care shown to our father.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 4209 Lakeland Dr., Ste. 298, Flowood, MS 39232-9212.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 pm, Saturday, November 2, 2013 at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 19130 Commission Road, Long Beach. The funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm, with a visitation one hour prior, on Sunday, November 3, 2013 in the funeral home chapel. Entombment will take place immediately following services at Gulf Pines Memorial Mausoleum in Long Beach.
