Sondra Ann Harris Johnson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, friend, nurse, and Christian, age 74, of Long Beach, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 13, 2021.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Esther Harris; and her mother and father-in-love, Charlie and Irma Johnson.
She is survived by: husband of 53 years, Jimmy Johnson; her father, M.T. Harris; her children, Jason Johnson, Julie Johnson, and Jessica Johnson; her grandchildren, Tabitha Johnson, Taylor Johnson, Danton Johnson, Daylin Johnson, Emerald Ann "Emmy" Schmidt, Miley Schmidt, and Briley Schmidt; 2 sisters, Donna Bevier (Jim) and Brenda Fulton (Billy); and numerous nephews, nieces, extended family and many friends.
Sondra was born Indianapolis, IN then moved all over the United States with her parents due to her father's military career. Her father was then stationed in Biloxi before retirement and the family lived in Ocean Springs where Sondra attended her last 3 years of high school and graduated in 1965. She then attended Mobile Infirmary School of Nursing and graduated in 1968 and began her 50 year nursing career. She worked at Mobile Infirmary after graduating then moved back to the Mississippi Gulf Coast and lived in Gulfport with her husband. She then worked at The Eyes, Ears, Nose, Throat Hospital in Gulfport, worked for Dr Ben Kitchens in Long Beach, at one point, worked at South Mississippi Home Health for about 20 years, the last 6 years she was the Gulf Coast Director, and then she worked for Memorial Hospital at Gulfport for 20 years. She served numerous roles during her nursing career, she loved helping and caring for people but she was most passionate about her Hospice Nurse career. She received a lot of awards and recognition over the years, especially in her career. She received Director of the Year from South Mississippi Home Health. She was recognized as a Guardian Angel in 2017 from Memorial Hospital for her years of service and dedication to her patients.
Sondra was a faithful member of First Baptist Church in Long Beach for over 45 years where she enjoyed serving on committees, teaching Sunday School, leading bible studies, and all the fellowship with her church family.
Sondra lived life to the fullest, loved her family, especially her grandkids, and followed them all over to watch activities and sports. She enjoyed crafting and shopping, talking to everyone - she never met a stranger - and was a friend to many. She also enjoyed traveling, eating out, spending time with her friends, family events, and she loved helping and caring for others.
She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi and Home Extension, The Exchange Club of Gulfport and Exchange Club of Long Beach.
Visitation will be on Monday, May 17, 2021, from 5 - 7 pm at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 19130 Commission Road, Long Beach. The funeral service will be at 1 pm Tuesday at First Baptist Church, 300 N Cleveland Ave., Long Beach, MS 39560. Interment will be in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the First Baptist Church of Long Beach.
