SGM Susanna Julia Sharkey, U. S Army, retired, age 77, passed away Thursday, January 25, 2018 in Gulfport.
She was a native of White Plains, New York, but her family moved to Hollywood, Florida when she was 10 years old.  She graduated from Central Catholic High School in Ft. Lauderdale.
Following high School graduation, she enlisted in the U.S. Army, and served honorably for 30 years, achieving the rank of Sergeant Major. During her military career she lived in numerous locations, including France, Korea, Arizona, the Pentagon, West Point Military Academy in New York, and two tours of duty in Germany. SGM Sharkey's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Commendation Medal with three oak leaf clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal with 10 oak leaf clusters, and the Marksman Badge for M-16 Rifle. Following her military career, she was employed with Grand Canyon University in Administration.
She was a summa cum laude graduate of Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, AZ where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Business, and was also a graduate of the U.S. Army Sergeant Major Academy.
SGM Sharkey had an avid interest in basketball and played both in high school and while in the Army. In her free time, she enjoyed participating in Volksmarches, and loved college football, especially Notre Dame.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Paul Sharkey and Eleanor (Robertson) Sharkey.
SGM Sharkey is survived by her sister, Patricia A. Howington; nephews: Michael C. Howington, and Steven Joseph Howington, all of San Diego, CA; and her cousins: Betsy Pottey and Paula McQuaid, both of Sandwich, MA; Lois Wozniak of Haverhill, MA, John Robertson of Valley Forge, PA, Barbara Clifford of Blakeley, GA, Brenda Lewis of Ft. Worth, TX, and Jane Gambone of Audubon, PA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:15 a.m. on Friday, February 2, 2018 at Armed Forces Retirement Home chapel,   1800 Beach Drive, Gulfport, MS.  Interment will take place at a later date in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery in San Diego, CA.
