Rufus Samuel Mallett

d. June 24, 2016

Rufus Samuel Mallett, 91, passed away Friday, June 24, 2016.
He settled in the Latimer community in 1952, referred to by some as North Biloxi's Last Cowboy due to his lifelong interest in cattle and knowledge of animal care. He traded livestock with many of the historical families in the surrounding area and passed on many legends and stories about local happenings. He was also an honorary member of the D'Iberville Historical Society. Simplicity, honesty, and independence were his way of life. He believed his life's purpose was work, for the benefit of others and himself.
His survivors include his three children, Sharon Mallett Kenna of Latimer, Robin Gannon (Pat) of Wiggins, Fred S. Mallett of Latimer; grandchildren, Mary Cariker, John Cosmich, Patricia Allen, William ""Billy"" Cosmich, Richard Cosmich, Christopher Gannon, Steven Lindsay, Christa Brignac, Erin Kenna; eleven great-grandchildren; one brother, Jerry K. Mallett and one sister Patricia Neal.
Preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Chinn Mallett; his parents, Fred Samuel Mallett and Virda Mallett; two step-children, Leanna Besse Cosmich, Richard Michael Besse; and his siblings, Lamar Mallett, Thelma Crosby, Ione Everett, Hilda Deane, Fredrick Marion Mallett, Presley ""Doc"" Mallett, Virda Davis, David Mallett, Harrell Mallett; and his best friend of 24 years, Mavis Howell.
The family wishes to express a special ""Thank You"", to his brother Jerry Mallett and niece Jill Olsen, who gave such special care in recent years, as well as Biloxi Regional Hospital staff, Biloxi Internal Medicine Clinic, Dr. Ben Cheney and staff, and the caregivers of Gentiva Hospice. It was truly special.
