~~ Roland Dexter Mills, 84 of Vancleave, MS passed away peacefully at his home on October 18, 2017 in the company of his devoted daughter, katherine Shaver.
An honored Navy veteran, consummate storyteller, skilled golfer, avid sports fan and proud father of five, he lived his life enthusiastically and was a fast friend to many.
His life was marked by inexhaustible curiosity and a love of learning and travel, leading him to pursue varied careers on both the east and west coasts, starting as a corpsman in the Navy and then moving on to management with Grant Brothers Stores, and Disneyland, to English language teaching and finally to various positions within the valet, hotel and hospitality industry.
After retiring in Southern California, he moved to Mississippi to be near his oldest daughter and her children. In his free time as a retiree, he loved to spend time with his great-grandchildren, play video poker and blackjack at the casino, do crossword puzzles, play electronic games and watch classic television programs.
Born in Melrose, MA on September 15, 1933, he was the sixth of seven children born to William James Mills and Margaret Bernice Carter Mills.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his son, Thomas Bryan Mills; his wife of 22 years, Frances Gail Mason Mills; siblings, William James Mills, Walter Sargent Mills, Arthur Bernard Mills, Gloria Hope Mills Sheltry, Marion Gertrude Mills Fregosi and Donna Clarie Mills Bulla.
He is survived by his children, Katherine Sue Mills Shaver, Roland Dexter Mills, Jr., Victoria Hope Mills, and Janet Gail Mills Schneider; his grandchildren, Kimberly Sue Shaver Parsley, Stacy Jeanette Mills Rodriguez, David Wayne Shaver, Sarah Kaylynn Shaver Isom, Samantha Korine Shaver Dees, Evan Christopher Mills, Margaret Mary Schneider, Kloe Hope Mills and Thomas Walter Schneider; great-grandchildren, Austin Michael Gautreaux, Prestyn Lee Dees, Brooklynn Kay Dees, Noah Reve Rodriguez, Austin Isom; great-great granddaughter Julietta Monet Gautreaux; numerous nieces, nephews, friends and family.
A visitation for Mr. Mills will be held on November 17, 2017 from 10:00 AM ~ 11:15 AM, at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 13872 Lemoyne Blvd at the corner of Washington Ave. in West Jackson County, with graveside service to follow at 12:30 PM in Biloxi National Cemetery.
