Rodney M. Van Loon

Rodney M. Van Loon, Sr., age 92, of Biloxi, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 22, 2013. He was preceded in death by a son, Rodney M. Van Loon, Jr., his parents, Charles and Mabel Van Loon, his brothers, Curt Van Loon, Neal Van Loon, Gale Van Loon, and his sister, Gladys Paudler.
Survivors include his wife of 69 years, Eunice Van Loon, his children, Dennis (Margaret) Van Loon of Ocean Springs, Teresa (Bill) Breeden of Saucier, Gilbert (Clare) Van Loon of Jackson and Melissa Van Loon of Biloxi, his daughter-in-law, Donna Van Loon, of Gulfport, his grandchildren, Brooke Van Loon, Marshall Van Loon, Elizabeth Van Loon, Bryant Van Loon, and Mary Clare Van Loon, his sister Mary (Steve) Tolvstad of Minneapolis, Minnesota, numerous other relatives and many friends.
Rod (or Marshall to his Wisconsin relatives) was born on December 21, 1921 in La Crosse, Wisconsin and graduated from Holmen High School in Holmen, Wisconsin. He enlisted in the Signal Corps, U. S. Army, in August 1942. After his discharge in 1946, he enrolled in the School of Engineering at the University of Wisconsin, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1949. Trading snow for Mississippi heat and humidity, Rod and Eunice moved to the Coast when Rod accepted a position as a radar instructor at Keesler AFB. He retired in 1986 as Chief, Training Equipment Branch, Keesler AFB, after 44 years of military and civilian service.
At the time of his death, Rod was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church. Throughout his life, Rod was always active in church activities, having served as Sunday School teacher, Board of Education chair, Elder, choir member, and congregational president among others.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, December 26, 2013 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Biloxi at 4:00 p.m., with the service to follow at 5:00 p.m. A private interment will be in Biloxi National Cemetery on Friday, December 27, 2013 at 9:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation in memory of Rodney Van Loon, Jr., 118 College Drive, #5210, Hattiesburg, MS 39406, or to a charity of one's choice.
