Robert H. Middleton, Jr, MD, died Saturday, December 20, 2014, at Gulfport Memorial Hospital.
He was known as Bobby by his classmates in his Biloxi High School Class of 1948. He was born in 1929 in Shubuta, MS but was a resident of the Gulf Coast since the 1940's. After graduating from high school, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War for 5 years where he was stationed aboard the troop transport ships, J.C. Breckenridge and E.D. Patrick. He also trained at Bethesda, MD as a medical technologist during his time in the Navy. He graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi and was accepted into the first graduating class of the University of Mississippi Medical School in Jackson, MS. Upon completion of medical school, Bob, as he was known by his classmates at this point, interned at Shreveport, LA at the Confederate Memorial Hospital. He also practiced at the Birdwell-Rushing Clinic for several years. Dr. Eldon Bolton hired the young Dr. Middleton to join his practice at the Trudeau Bolton Clinic. He practiced there for 34 years before his retirement. He was a member of the American Medical Society, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Coast Medical Society, serving as president for two terms. He was the physician for the Biloxi High School Football team for 34 years where he could be seen standing alongside the football field during all home games with his signature cigar in his mouth wearing his red sport coat. GO INDIANS! He was also the physician for the Golden Gloves and Biloxi Boxing teams. He served as the Medical Director for Amserv Ambulance Service and The Kare Center. He was on the Board of Directors for Biloxi Regional Hospital. He was a member of Parkway Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert H. Middleton, Sr., and his mother, Lula Mae Stallings Middleton.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Joan Smith Middleton, three children, Robert, III (Anne) of Naples, FL, Dianne Thomas (Sam) of Madison, MS, and Sandra Hixson (Kevin) of Austin, TX, eight grandchildren, Daniel, Sarah, Ashleigh, Sammy, Abbie, Conner, Colton, and Caden, 1 great-grandchild, Amaya, and one brother, Franklin Doyle Middleton (Jan) of Runaway Bay, TX.
Visitation will be on Monday, December 22, 2014, from 5 - 7 pm at the RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 274 Beauvoir Road, Biloxi. The funeral service will be at 11 am Tuesday in the funeral home chapel with visitation from 10 - 11 am.
