Robert Charles Jermyn (Bob), age 95, a lifetime resident of Gulfport, peacefully passed away on Friday, December 7, 2012, surrounded by his family.
Bob, or ""Bobby"" to his family and lifelong friends, was born on September 5, 1917, and lived throughout his childhood, and some of his adult life, on Tegarden Road. His parents, George and Mary (Peppard) Jermyn, raised a family of 8 boys and 3 girls, one of few families who had its own baseball team. Bob attended Mississippi City School and St. James Catholic Church. He graduated from Gulfport High School.
In 1939, he married the love of his life, Amelia Ann Phillips, raised 2 sons, Bobby Ray and Tommy, and celebrated 68 anniversaries with her until her death in 2007. Throughout their life together, Bob was a baker in several groceries and bakeries. His second career was that of a postal carrier, mostly in the Handsboro and Fernwood areas. He brought his sunny, corny, upbeat personality to everything he did. From his time as an altar boy at St. James to Eucharistic Minister and all round helper to the priests at St. John's, Bob was always active in the Catholic Church, becoming close friends and fishing buddies with several priests. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, and received the Bishop's Service Cross Award in 1985.
In addition to his parents and wife, Amelia, Bob is preceded in death by a son, Capt. Bobby Ray Jermyn, US Army, who was killed in action in Viet Nam in 1967; also by sisters, Enola Jermyn and Thelma Duling and brothers: George, Billy, Jack, Dick, and Pat Jermyn.
Survivors include his son, Tom Jermyn and his wife Linda of Gulfport, beloved granddaughters, Debra Biggs (Huntley), Gulfport, and Rebecca Graves (Brian), Mobile, and great grandchildren, Sydney and Thomas Biggs. He is also survived by his sister, Catherine Wood (Bill) of Pass Christian, and brothers, Tom Jermyn of Somerset, Massachusetts, and Harry Jermyn of Albuquerque, New Mexico, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at St. James Catholic Church, where friends may visit one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Evergreen Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Society (a ministry to the needy), St. James Catholic Church, 366 Cowan Road, Gulfport, MS 39507.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the caring staff at Lakeview Nursing Center, and to Deacon Dick Henderson for years of ministry to our Paw Paw and Maw Maw.
