Rita Mabel Swenson, age 79 of Long Beach, passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, Boyd Vernon Swenson; her parents, Victor and Mabel Carman; and her siblings, Ronald Carman, Jonah Carman and Marnetta Lockner.

Rita is survived by her son, Travis (Betsy) Swenson and her grandchildren, Scott Swenson, Juliet Swenson, Mark Swenson and Luke Swenson.

She was born and raised in South Dakota, where she graduated from Highmore High School in Ree Heights where she played basketball and the clarinet. After graduation, she met the love of her life, Boyd, and together they built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and 56 years of cherished memories.

Rita was a proud military wife to Boyd, who faithfully served 20 years in the United States Air Force. Their journey together took them to Bossier City, Louisiana, where they lived for 13 years before making their home in Long Beach, Mississippi, where they spent the remainder of their lives.

Rita enjoyed a fulfilling 30-year career as a bookkeeper for various businesses. Following her retirement, she continued to give her time and compassion to others by volunteering in the Cath Lab at Memorial Hospital of Gulfport. She was also a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church in Long Beach.

Rita found joy in the simple pleasures of life. She loved dancing with her husband, Boyd, tending to her garden, baking, playing Pinochle with friends, visiting the casinos, and, most of all, spending time with her grandchildren. Rita was affectionately known for making the best mashed potatoes in the world! Her warmth, kindness, and love for her family and friends touched the lives of all who knew her.

Rita was deeply loved and will be dearly missed. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those fortunate enough to have known and loved her.

Funeral service will be held at 12:00 pm on Friday, October 2, 2026, at Grace Lutheran Church, 19221 Pineville Rd, Long Beach, MS 39560, with visitation beginning at 11:00 am. Reception at the church will be held from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm with graveside to follow at 2:30 pm at Biloxi National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Rita's name to Grace Lutheran Church.
