Richard David "Dick" Speck, age 78, met Jesus on August 10, 2026. He was born in Kearney, NE on September 20, 1947 and he passed away at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport.

He was preceded in death by his son, Randall David Speck; his parents, Harrison and Arlene Speck and his brother-in-law, Raymond Weaver.

Dick is survived by his loving wife of almost 54 years, Carol Trehern Speck; their daughter, Allison Speck Walker (Jason) and their daughters, Azlyn Walker and Atley Walker. He is also survived by his two sisters, Diana Weaver and her daughter, Wendy Teague (Robert) and their sons, Sean and Nicholas; Cathy Johnson (Doug) and their daughters, Erin Schmid (Mike) and Brianna Whitworth (Alex) and their son, Max.

Dick attended Kearney State University prior to serving in the US Navy Seabees in Gulfport. His first experience in Gulfport was Hurricane Camille. He said he didn’t understand why anyone would live here with the chance of hurricanes although he changed his mind and lived here until his passing. Dick also served in the Vietnam Conflict. He was shot once and wounded once, when a mine was detonated under the truck he was driving. He was flown to Japan where he was treated for wounds and returned to Vietnam where he completed his tour.

Upon being released from medical hold due to his medical issues at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, he was honorably discharged. From there he was selected for a job at the Veterans Administration working at both the Gulfport and Biloxi stations. Dick held various jobs until he was selected for the engineering supervisor job, handling all of the services including the boiler plant, plumbers, a/c shop, electricians, etc. and retired in 2004.

Dick enjoyed antique cars and hunting deer and turkeys. He was the owner of two classic cars, a 1929 Ford Roadster and a 1932 Chevrolet Sedan. He was a member of the American Legion Post 119, Veterans of Foreign Wars 4526, and the First Baptist Church on Highway 605, Gulfport, MS 39503. He was on the safety team and enjoyed greeting people, especially the children on Sunday mornings.

We want to thank Dr. Allison Wall, Dr. Eric Anderson and all of the nurses who were so professional and kind to him. We are at peace knowing he not only met Jesus, but is now reunited with his son, Randall who passed away from cancer in 1996.

Visitation will be on Monday, August 17, 2026, from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Gulfport. The funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM in the church. A graveside service will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to First Baptist Church, 12190 MS-605, Gulfport, MS 39503 or to his son’s fund, the Randall Speck Pediatric Special Needs Fund at the Memorial Hospital Foundation in Gulfport.
