Reginald ""Reggie"" L. Bass, age 86, a native and lifelong resident of Long Beach, passed away on Monday, October 10, 2011, in Long Beach.
Mr. Bass was part of the Bass Family that were some of the earliest settlers in Long Beach. He was a 1943 graduate of Long Beach High School. The day after he graduated from high school, he joined the United States Navy with his best friend, William Skellie of Long Beach.
Mr. Bass was a devoted and loyal employee of Mississippi Power. He truly loved his work and retired after 36 years of service. He served on the Long Beach School Board for 15 years and was the President of the board at the time when the new Long Beach High School opened in September of 1958. He was a member of the former Central Baptist Church, Past Master of Masonic Lodge Southern Star #500, and was Worthy Patron of Eastern Star #306, all in Long Beach. Mr. Bass was also an avid golfer and fisherman. He was a tomato farmer and passionate in his desire to grow the finest tomatoes on the Coast. He delighted in surprising family and friends with gifts of large bags of tomatoes.
Mr. Bass was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd & Artie Beech Bass; his sister, Nona Lee Watts; his brother, Jimmy Bass and an infant brother.
He is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 66 years, Lottie M. Bass of Long Beach; his sons, Dr. R. Eugene (Lynda) Bass and David (Mimi) Bass all of Long Beach; his daughters, Gloria (Rick) Ricker of Long Beach and Annette (Randy) Wells of Post Falls, ID; his brothers, Carl (Gay) Bass of Long Beach, B.B. (Nancy) Bass of Pass Christian, Troy (Carol) Bass of Ocean Springs; a special sister in law, Betty Ruth Lee of Long Beach; six grandchildren, Tyler (Jaime) Bass of Long Beach, Taylor Bass of Baton Rouge, LA, Lindsey Bourne of Long Beach, Alexandria Ricker of Atlanta, GA and Josh & Johnna Wells of Portland, OR; four great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 12, 2011, from 6pm-9pm at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 19130 Commission Road in Long Beach.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Thursday, October 13, 2011, at 10am in the funeral home chapel. Interment will follow at Gulf Pines Cemetery in Long Beach.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Rachel and all the staff at St. Joseph Hospice.
