He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Dorothy Wortel; his father, Raymond Edward Wortel; and his sister, Dorothy Louise Wortel.
Ray is survived by his wife of 20 years, Helen Emily Wortel of Gulfport, MS; his children, Gemma (Dennis) Wortel of Chicago, IL, Penny (Mike) Fitzpatrick of Montgomery, IL, Raymond (Jennifer) Wortel and Mary (Bryan) Northum, all of Austin, TX, Kelly Wortel of Chicago, IL; his siblings, Edward (Jane) Wortel of Gulfport, MS, Joseph (Betty) Wortel of Plainfield, IL, Ronald (Vicki) Wortel of Steger, IL, and Robert (Carla) Wortel of Gulfport, MS; his grandchildren, Aaron, Sean, Ryan, Nathaniel, Claire, Christian, Drew, Melody, Madison, Joshua, Katelyn, Ericka, and Brittany.
Ray and his wife were snowbirds from Chicago, IL who just recently built a home in Gulfport, MS. After he graduated from High School, he also graduated from Greer Technical School.
After serving two tours as a Seabee in the US Navy in the Vietnam War, he received many awards and medals for his marksmanship.
Ray retired after 30 years with Madison Paper Company, formerly FSC Paper Company, in Alsip, IL.
He loved to work on stained glass pieces. He made a beautiful window for their motorhome of a hummingbird. He liked to watch football games only when the Chicago Bears were playing.
Ray was a great friend and a wonderful husband. His children lived in other states which made visits difficult; he saw them as often as possible. He adored his grandchildren and doted on them when he saw them. We will miss him and his warm, loving heart. Rest in peace my love. I will love you forever.
Memorial Contributions may be made in Ray's name to the American Heart Association, 2159 E. Pass Road, Gulfport, MS 39507 or to the American Lung Association, 55 W. Wacker Drive, Suite 1150, Chicago, IL 60601.
