Obituary

Peter Joseph Sakalaukus Sr., age 66, passed away unexpectedly on October 1, 2026.

Peter was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and proud United States Army veteran. He is survived by his wife, Tammy Sakalaukus, whom he married on July 31, 1982. Together, Peter and Tammy shared more than 44 years of marriage and raised four children: Peter Sakalaukus Jr. (Sarah), James Sakalaukus (Yasemin), Janeah Sakalaukus (Alec), and Joshua Sakalaukus (Megan).

Peter served in the United States Army. He went on to earn his master’s degree and taught at the University of Southern Mississippi. He later continued his career at Stennis Space Center, where he worked until his retirement.

He was a proud grandfather to Gloria Jayne, Violet, Peter (III), Jackson, Roman, Micah, and George. He is also survived by his siblings, Joanne Sakalaukus and David Sakalaukus; his niece, Amy; and his nephew, Carl.

Peter was preceded in death by his mother, Joan Mary Sakalaukus, and his sister, Mary Lou Sakalaukus.

Peter’s unexpected passing leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, extended family, and friends.

Perhaps Peter summed himself up best with his favorite line from Popeye: “I yam what I yam, and that’s all that I am.”

A celebration of Peter’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation in Peter’s memory.

Riemann Family Funeral Home, Long Beach, is honored to serve the family.  Please sign the online guestbook and share memories at www.riemannfamily.com
