Otis “Otie” Kelly Scales, Jr., age 71 of Gulfport, passed away on Thursday, May 21, 2026.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis Kelly Scales, Sr. and Carolyn Sheffield Scales; and his sister, Kathy Talkington.

Otie is survived by his loving wife of 21 years, Lillie Scales; his children, Otis “Kelly” (Eriko) Scales, III, Mindy Ertz, James (Aubrey) Ertz, and Daniel Poyner; his grandchildren, Savannah Scales, Laylah Ertz, Vinnie Ertz, Allister Shue and Trinity Scales; his brother, Gary Scales; and his nephew, Tyler (Julie) Talkington.

Because Otie’s father served in the United States Air Force, his childhood was spent moving from place to place before the family eventually settled on the Gulf Coast. Otie graduated from St. Martin High School and later earned an associate degree from Jefferson Davis Community College. Following graduation, he proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served his country honorably for 10 years.

After completing his military service, Otie began a dedicated 26-year career with the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier. Outside of work, he enjoyed riding and working on motorcycles, collecting and building guns, and took special pride in the American flag, fittingly sharing his birthday with Flag Day. He also loved traveling across the country with his beloved wife, Lillie.

Above all, Otie was devoted to his family. He was deeply proud of his children and cherished every opportunity to spend time with them and his grandchildren.
