Oscar "O.J." Joseph Peterson III, born on April 17, 1944, peacefully passed away on June 15, 2026, in Gulfport, Mississippi. He was a man known for being a person of few words, but those who took the time to know him found a friendly spirit with a great sense of humor.
O.J. owned and operated Peterson's Chevron in Perkinson, MS, where he served his community with dedication and care. He was also a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, a place that held an important place in his life.
One of O.J.'s proudest joys was fishing in the Gulf, a passion he loved deeply and passed on to his children. This love of the outdoors and the sea remains a cherished memory for his family and friends.
OJ is survived by his sons, Ryan Peterson and his wife Tammy, and Brett Peterson. He also leaves behind his siblings, Chrystal Ladner and her husband O.V., Eddie Peterson and his wife Susie, and Marilyn "Mert" Beard. His grandchildren, Kilee Peterson, Ty Peterson, and his fiancé' Samantha Wells, and Kelsey Peterson and her fiancé', Jeffrey Smith, along with great-grandchildren Beckham Peterson and Tenley Smith, will carry forward his memory.
Family was a central part of O.J.'s life, and he will be remembered with love by his living relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Elodie Peterson; his baby daughters, Angela and Tamela Peterson; his son, Shon Peterson; and his sister, Margie Lee.
Friends and family are invited to honor Oscar's life at St. Matthew Catholic Church, located at 27074 St Matthew Church Rd, Perkinson, MS 39573. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 AM. Burial will take place at Necaise Crossing Cemetery on Earl C Ladner Rd, with the service starting at 12:30 PM.
