Orbie Patton, Jr.

Orbie Martin Patton, Jr. went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 3, 2018.  He was born to Orbie Martin Patton, Sr. and Alma Jumper Patton on November 9, 1929, in Gulfport, MS and was reared in the Jackson, MS and Copiah County, MS areas before returning to Gulfport.  He was a member of Bayou View Baptist Church where he taught the Senior Men's Sunday School class and served in other areas.
He served in the U. S. Army.  As a young man, Orbie played professional baseball for the St. Louis Browns, Baltimore Orioles and later scouted for the Orioles and the New York Yankees.  He coached and played semiprofessional baseball, including with the Gulfport Shippers, and coached baseball for many years from Little League through American Legion baseball.  He also was an umpire for a number of years.  He organized the Gulf Coast Baseball League and the Coast Umpires Association.  He was a Golden Gloves boxer in his early years, later refereeing boxing matches on the Coast.  Orbie was an avid golfer and was a member of Broadwater, Great Southern, Edgewater and Bayou View Golf Clubs.  He retired as a Vice President from Hancock Bank and later worked for the Gulfport Recreation Department, Garden Park Hospital, and Bayou View Baptist Church.  He was a member of numerous civic organizations over the years.
Orbie was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Bobby Patton, and a sister, Margie Dyer.  He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley S. Patton; his children, Lisa and Mike Dodson, Mark and Joyce Patton, and Julie Patton; his grandchildren, Zachary and Candice Dodson, Samantha and David Kelley, Lindsay Farmer, and Zane Snelgrove; his greatgrandchildren, James Savell, III, Cheyenne Williams, Zackari and Jade Snelgrove, Vanessa Snelgrove, Zeke Snelgrove, Jayden Kelley, Tyler Kelley, and Nolan Kelley; his great-greatgranchildren, Zailyn Snelgrove and Zyla Snelgrove; his brother, Jack M. Patton; brother-in-laws, sister-in-laws, and numerous nieces and nephews and their children.
Services will be held on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at Bayou View Baptist Church, Chamberlain Avenue, Gulfport, MS at 1:00 P.M. with visitation at the Church from 11:30 A.M. until 1:00 P.M.  Burial will be at the Biloxi National Cemetery at 2:30 P.M.
The family wishes to thank and extends its gratitude to the very caring and professional doctors, nurses and staff at the Veterans Administration hospice unit (Niagara) and physical therapy unit (Potomac) and at Garden Park Hospital.  Your care of Orbie was wonderful, but we are most grateful for the gentleness and kindness with which you treated him and our family.
