Obituary

Oliver Anthony Sahuque, 84, of Ansley, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 13, 2026.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth Evans Sahuque and Louis Sahuque, Sr.; his brother, Louis Sahuque, Jr.; his sisters, Myrna Johnson and Betty Ridgel; his grandson, Travis Finley; and his son-in-law, Walter Madley.

Oliver is survived by his beloved wife of 66 years, Janet Sahuque; his children, Anthony (Val) Sahuque, Cindy Finley, Marty (Penny) Sahuque, Sherry Madley, Carey (Scott) Tartavoulle, and Lacey (Ronald) Sahuque; his grandchildren, Malise Draughon, Lester Disher, Jade (Brent) Sahuque, Scott Tartavoulle, Brett Disher, Kelsey (Austin) Rickstrew, Heath Sahuque, Brandon Tartavoulle, Elijah Sahuque, Olivia Tartavoulle, and Miles Kieflin; and his great-grandchildren, Emiliah, Joseph, Ellie, Malakai, Skylar, and Shane, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Born in New Orleans, Oliver longed for a life more closely connected to nature. That calling led him to the Gulf Coast, where he met the love of his life and built a beautiful life together, raising their six children. He spent his years on the water as a commercial fisherman, a life that suited his spirit and deep appreciation for the outdoors.

In addition to his life on the water, Oliver built a home on his land where he raised farm animals and created a life rooted in hard work and simplicity. After retirement, he devoted himself fully to tending the land, finding great joy and purpose in caring for what he had built.

Oliver had a natural gift for music and a remarkable voice. He never missed a chance to take the stage to sing or play—and he certainly never missed an opportunity to dance with his beloved Janet. Whether working on a boat, spending time at the barn, or taking on a new project, he was always happiest outside, surrounded by the natural world he loved.

He saw God’s beauty in everything around him, and his strong Christian faith guided him throughout his life. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather—steadfast, hardworking, and resilient. Known for his sharp wit and sense of humor, he left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all whose lives he touched.

A Mass in his honor will be held at St. Anne Church on Saturday, April 18th at 11:00 AM, with visitation beginning at 9:00 AM, followed by a Celebration of life gathering after the Mass.
