Olin T. Gunter

CMSgt. Olin T. Gunter, USAF Retired, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, after a brief illness. Chief Gunter was born January 22, 1935, in Anderson, South Carolina and had been a resident of the Gulf Coast since 1970. He was a retired U.S. Air Force Veteran with 25 years of service and retired in June 1979, at Keesler AFB, Mississippi. His last duty in the air force was as superintendent of hospital services at Keesler Medical Center. During his military career he received the following commendations and citations: Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal (with three oak leaf clusters), Army Good Conduct Medal (with two awards), Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon (with five awards), Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, National Defense Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal (with four awards), and the Air Force Presidential Unit Award.
After retirement from the military, he worked as an Allstate Insurance agent for 11 years, retiring in 1990. He was a Mason since 1967, and belonged to the Masonic Lodge in Minot, North Dakota. He was also a Shriner and belonged to the Joppa Temple in Woolmarket, Mississippi.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carole Edwards Gunter of Swindon, England; his father, Hallie G. Gunter and mother, Hattie L. Gunter of Tignall, Georgia.
He is survived by his wife, Gisela ""Gigi"" Gunter; son, Olin T. Gunter, Jr. (Laurie), daughter, Debra J. Kovacevich (Ivan); son, Edward L. Gunter (Mandy); his sister, Patsy Thompson (Don); brother, Tony Gunter; granddaughters, Torie Gunter Anderson (Chris) and Haley E. Gunter; grandsons, Joseph Gunter (Beth) and Ashley Gunter (Brandy); great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to be made to the Humane Society of South MS, 2615 25th Avenue, Gulfport, Mississippi 39501.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, November 6, 2014, from 5pm until 7pm at Riemann Family Funeral Home, 274 Beauvoir Road in Biloxi.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 7, 2014, at 10am at Biloxi National Cemetery.
