Norma Jean Governor of Gulfport, MS, passed away on Wednesday, September 14, 2016. Norma was born September 29, 1932, in Pass Christian, MS. At the age of 26, she met her husband of 57 years, Richard Governor.
Norma was a devoted wife and mother. She was a talented gardener, cook and baker. As a young lady, she worked in the Gold Medal bakery in Pass Christian, MS. She continued her baking career for 15 years at a local bakery in San Antonio, Texas, after her family moved from the MS Gulf Coast and her young children were grown.
Norma Governor was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Joseph Smith and Jenny Labigang Kowalski Smith; her brothers, Frankie and Jody Kowalski; her sisters, Sally Atherton, Helen Smith and Mary Nelson; and her great grandson, Elijah Earl Smith.
Survivors include her children, Judith A. Smith, Margaret J. Crawley, Walter J. Governor, Helen E Poast, Richard P. Governor, Marian R. Gest, and Philip Governor; her grandchildren, C. Bradley Smith, C. Ryan Smith, Jordan A. Smith, Jeremy R. Crawley, D. Adam Crawley, Audrey J. Governor, Kara M. Governor, Comron Moeni, Kaihon Moeni, Mehron Moeni, and Hannah M. Gest; and great grandchildren, C. Jack Smith and Emma N Smith.
The family would like to thank the staff of Bay Cove Assisted Living and the personnel at Gulfport Memorial Hospital.
Friends are invited to visit the Governor family from 11:00 am to 12:00 p.m., Monday, September 19, 2016, at St. James Catholic Church, Gulfport, MS, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 p.m. A graveside service at the Biloxi National Cemetery will begin at 1:30 p.m.
