Mr. John Wesley Smith

John Wesley Smith, age 96, of Long Beach, Mississippi, passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2026, in Long Beach, Mississippi.

Born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, John spent part of his early life in Georgia, where much of his family resides, before making his way to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He settled in Long Beach, Mississippi, where he proudly made his home for the last 60 years of his life.

John proudly served his country during the Korean War and was a recipient of the Purple Heart in recognition of his sacrifice and service. His military service remained an important part of his life's story and a source of pride for his family.

Throughout his working years, John was known for his dedication and strong work ethic. He worked as a longshoreman for 18 years and also served his community through his employment with Harrison County. His years of hard work reflected his commitment to providing for his family and contributing to the community he called home.

John shared 70 wonderful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Eileen B. Smith. Together, they built a life centered on family and the many memories they created over seven decades.

An avid gardener, John found great joy in tending to his garden and sharing the fruits of his labor with others. His generosity extended beyond family and friends to local food pantries, where he donated fresh produce from his garden to help those in need. Gardening was more than a hobby for John; it was one of the many ways he showed kindness and gave back to his community. Mr. Smith was a member of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church where he and his wife faithfully attended the 7:30 Sunday mass.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Nola Smith; and his siblings, James, Thomas, Paul, Edward, Margaret, Louise, Howard, Eva Pearl, Charles, Joe, and Carl.

John is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Eileen B. Smith; his three sons, Gregory, Gary (Megin), and Jeffery; his brother, Henry Smith; and many nieces and nephews.

John's 96 years were marked by a lifetime of service to his country, dedication to his work, generosity toward others, and devotion to his family. His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff of St. Joseph Hospice for their exceptional care, kindness, and support during this difficult time.
