It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Michael Steven Machen, our wonderful husband and father, passed away on Friday, March 1, 2013 after a very brave fight. He had his wife, children, brothers and sister by his side when he stepped out of this life and into the next to be with God and his parents. He fought so hard to stay with us, but it wasn't God's plan.
Michael was born on October 1, 1948 in Montgomery, Alabama to Joseph Winford and Maxine Poirier Machen. He was the second of 6 children and had plenty of stories to tell about growing up in a big, rambunctious and devoutly Catholic family. After school and various jobs he worked for ICG Railroad for many years before retiring. Later, he worked as a sales executive for Southwestern Bell and then AT&T, until medical reasons forced him into final early retirement.
He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his wife, Enid Long Machen, daughters, Angela Grice (Robby), and Candace Holmes (Chris), son, Matt Yonko, sister, Madeliene Lord (David), brothers, Joseph Machen II (Carol), Timothy Machen (Dottie), Stephen Machen, Christopher Machen (JoJo), grandchildren, Miranda Machen, Parker Holder, Zackary Grice, Rowland Yonko, Alison Yonko, and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was a great father and grandfather who always let his children know how proud he was of them. He told them he loved them every chance he had and he made sure he showed it by always putting them first. He will be missed more than he could ever know. We love you, Pop, and are so glad you are no longer in pain. We will see you again, but until then, you will never be far from our hearts.
A funeral service will be held at St. Peter's by the Sea Episcopal Church in Gulfport, Mississippi on Friday, March 8, 2013 at 3:00 pm with a visitation beginning at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate contributions to the American Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice.
