Mayzell Byrne Hancock, age 95, of Gulfport, ascended into Heaven with the angels of whom she often spoke on Thursday, May 17, 2018.
Mrs. Hancock was born in Silver Creek in Lawrence County to Richmond Oliver and Martha Cornelia Honea Byrne.  She was a longtime member of Grace Memorial Baptist Church.  She never met a stranger, was a friend to many, was deeply loved, and will be greatly missed.  Mrs. Hancock enjoyed many hobbies in her younger days including crocheting, fishing, cooking, working crossword puzzles, and spending time with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Washington Hancock, whom she married in 1941; her parents; brothers, Claudie and Hulon Byrne; her sister, Maudie Miller.
She is survived by her daughter, Betty Hancock Shaw (Philip) of Gulfport; grandchildren, Daphne Holmes Kelly of Gulfport, and John Bonnell Holmes of Jackson, MS; great grandchildren, James Leonard Kelly, III of Washington, D.C., Meredith Carolyn Kelly of Gulfport, Henry Holmes Kelly of Oxford, MS, and Godfrey Christopher Negron Holmes of Hendersonville, NC; her beloved canine companion, Buffy; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 21, 2018, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Gulfport, at 11:00 AM, with a visitation for family and friends from 10:00 AM until the service. Burial will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the Angel Tree Program of Coast Prison Ministries, P.O. Box 8035, Gulfport, MS 39506.
