Maxine Louise Higdon, a cherished mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 18, 2026, in Ocean Springs, Mississippi, at the age of 98. Born on March 19, 1927, in Indiana, Maxine's journey through life was marked by love, faith, and an unwavering commitment to family and community.
Maxine devoted many years of her professional life as a secretary in the Biloxi School System, where she touched the lives of countless students and teachers alike with her kindness and dedication. Her commitment to her work mirrored her profound dedication to her family and her faith. A proud graduate of Campbellsville Baptist Junior College, Maxine exemplified the values of education and lifelong learning.
A beloved member of the First Baptist Church of Biloxi since 1951, Maxine's involvement in the church was nothing short of inspirational. She enriched the lives of those around her by teaching kindergarten, leading Sunday School classes, and sharing her melodious voice in the choir for many years. Her warmth, faith, and compassion resonated throughout the church community, making her a cherished figure there.
Maxine was a passionate woman with an array of hobbies that included camping, traveling, sewing, quilting, and cooking—talents for which she was well-known and admired. Her culinary skills delighted family gatherings, and her quilts wrapped loved ones in warmth and affection. Above all, she was devoted to being a loving mom and "mammaw," a title she wore with pride.
She is survived by her sons, Michael Higdon & his wife, Megan, of Tennessee, and David Higdon of Ocean Springs. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Michael's son, Michael B. Higdon, and David's children, Jennifer Pickel & her husband Robbie, Zachary Higdon & his wife Brittany, and Caitlin Pagitt & her husband David, along with seven beloved great-grandchildren who brought her immense joy.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Paul Higdon, who was not only her partner in life but her greatest confidant. She also mourned the loss of her parents, Raymond and Lona Blair, who guided her with love throughout her early years.
Her family invites friends and loved ones to celebrate her remarkable life and legacy. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at Riemann Family Funeral Home in Biloxi, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 AM. She will be laid to rest in a graveside service at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Gulfport.
As we bid farewell to Maxine, we remember her as a beacon of love, kindness, and faith—a woman who dedicated herself to nurturing her family and enriching her community. Though she will be greatly missed, her spirit and the memories she created will reside in the hearts of all who were privileged to know her.
