Maurice August Taquino, M.D., died on Monday, August 28, 2006, at his home in Diamondhead, MS.
Dr. Taquino was a 1946 graduate of Loyola University of South, New Orleans. He furthered his education at LSU School of Medicine (Doctor of Medicine and Surgery in 1951,) served a rotating internship at Charity Hospital in New Orleans in 1951, graduated from the Naval Flight Surgeon Program of the Naval School of Aviation Medicine in Pensacola, FL (1953), was a general surgeon at the VA Hospital in New Orleans from 1956-1957, was a general surgeon at Charity Hospital from 1957-1961, was recertified in 1978-1979 at the Naval School of Aviation in Pensacola, was a graduate of the Naval Post Graduate School in Monterey, CA (1980), and served his Occupational medicine residency at the University of CA in San Francisco in 1983-1984. He held his Louisiana license for general surgery since 1951 and his Mississippi license since 1961. His military service included a 1953-1956 active duty status with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, Navy Reserve from 1956-1979, active duty with the U.S. Navy again from 1979-1982, Navy Reserve from 1982-1986 at which time he retired.
Dr. Taquino practiced general surgery in Biloxi from 1961-1979, was one of three partners that built the started gulf Coast Medical Center in Biloxi, and served as Special Assistant to Chief of NAVAL Reserve Forces for Medical Reserve Programs from 1979-1982. He has worked the last 24 years at Stennis Space Center as Medical Director, having worked for Johnson Controls for 17 years, Occu-Health for 7 years, and MS Space Services beginning this year.
He was a member of the American Medical Association, MS State Medical Association, MS Coast Counties Medical Society, American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, American College of Physician Executives, Aerospace Medical Association, and the Round Table club in New Orleans. He received the Silver Snoopy Award presented by NASA astronauts.
Dr. Taquino was very active in the Diamondhead chapter of the VFW, was a former member of Treasure Oaks Country Club in Ocean Springs, and attended Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church.
Dr. Taquino was preceded in death by his parents, Morris Lewis and Rose mary Paretti Taquino.
He is survived by his wife, Linda N. Taquino of Diamondhead; children, Maurice A. Taquino of Birmingham and his wife Jill, Lawrence McDougal Taquino of Houston, TX and his wife Brenda, Laura Rose-Marie Taquino of Diamondhead, Bonnie Ila-Marie Taquino of Diamonhead; grandchildren, Maureen, Allister, and Lawson Taquino; and brother, Thomas P. Taquino and wife Rosemary of Arcadia, CA.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 31, 2006, at Gulf Coast Funeral Homes, Inc., 9113 Kiln DeLisle Road, where friends may call from 5-8 p.m. A prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, September 1, 2006, at Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 3368 Esplanade Avenue in New Orleans at 11:30 a.m. where friends may visit one hour prior.
Entombment will follow services at St. Louis #3 Cemetery in New Orleans.
The family prefers memorials to the MS Trooper's Association, or the American Cancer Society.
