Mattie Jo Byrd, age 72, of Gulfport, passed away on Wednesday, December 18, 2013.
Mrs. Byrd was born in Galveston, TX, to Raymond F. Smith, Jr. and Charlotte Ruth Hasselmeier Smith. She was a lifelong resident of Gulfport and had a true entrepreneurial spirit. She was a beautiful, loving, and strong woman. She was our angel here on Earth and now is our Heavenly angel looking over us. She will be missed dearly by her family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Raymond F. Smith, Jr.; her husband of 31 years, Verlon Byrd, Sr.; and her partner of 10 years, Charles ""Slim"" Meade.
She is survived by her mother, Charlotte Hasselmeier Smith; children, Verlon ""Tad"" Byrd, Jr. of Gulfport, and Tracy J. Byrd of Gulfport; siblings, Raymond F. Smith, III of Gulfport, and Patsy DeVries (and husband, Andrew) of Gulfport; three grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 23, 2013, at RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, 11280 Three Rivers Road, Gulfport, from 9:30 a.m.-11:00 a.m. Funeral services will be held in the chapel at 11:00 a.m.
Burial will follow at Finley Cemetery, Highway 53, Harrison County.
Memorials may be made to a charity of one's choosing, and tributes may be offered at www.riemannfamily.com.
