Mary Ann Langston Monroe, age 79, of Gulfport, slipped peacefully into eternal rest on Sunday, November 16, 2025, surrounded by love at Singing River Gulfport Hospital.

Born in Marion, South Carolina, Mary devoted her life to caring for others. From a young age, she carried a quiet strength and a natural tenderness that later guided her into her calling as a nurse. After earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Southern Mississippi, she spent her career uplifting countless families through her work at Memorial Hospital, Garden Park Hospital, and Biloxi Regional Medical Center. Her hands brought comfort, her presence brought calm, and her heart brought hope.

Mary was deeply committed to her profession, a Captain in the United States Army, a devoted caregiver, and a proud member of the American Society of Peri-Anesthesia Nurses (ASPAN). She also earned special certification through the Neonatal Resuscitation Program, reflecting her dedication to even the tiniest and most fragile lives. She served with humility, compassion, and an unshakable sense of purpose.

Mary’s life was shaped by the people she loved. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Robert George Monroe; her parents, William Burke Langston Sr., and Eloise Elizabeth Ray Langston; and her siblings, William Burke Jr. (“June Bug”), Fleetwood Augustus (“Pete”), Hannah Elizabeth “Betty” Pittman, and Harold Eugene “Gene”.

Those who remain will forever carry her memory close. Above all, she is lovingly remembered by her son, William Thomas Monroe III, one of the greatest joys of her life and the one whose presence brought her endless pride, purpose, and unconditional love.

In keeping with her wishes, no services will be held at this time, but her loved ones take comfort in knowing that her spirit lives on in the lives she touched, the patients she comforted, and the love she gave so freely.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to honor Mary’s memory by contributing to a charity of your choice, echoing her lifelong dedication to helping others.

Riemann Family Funeral Home, Gulfport, is honored to serve the Monroe family.
