Martha Jane "Janie" Grimes

Martha Jane Grimes, age 78 of Gulfport, passed away September 21, 2026 surrounded by loved ones. She was known by her family, friends, and community as Mom, Nana, or Janie. She was dedicated to her career and retired several years ago to care for her late husband, Walter "Gene". Janie enjoyed being outside, working in the yard, shopping, and being on the river with long time friend, Jennie Gray. Those who knew her loved her. She was a spitfire with a soft side for her family and friends.

She was born in Shreveport, LA. She moved to Alexandria, VA where she met the love of her life at 13 years old. In 1982, the family moved to Gulfport to live near her mother, Ethel. After the death of her husband and love of her life of nearly 60 years, she fell ill with dementia, and later, cancer. After a long battle with both diseases, she went to rest with her husband and daughter, Lisa.

She was preceded in her death by her mom, Ethel Straitil; her husband, Walter Eugene "Gene" Grimes Jr., and her daughter, Lisa Michelle Drainville.

She is survived in her death by her daughter, Casey (Rick) Neumann; her son, Frankie (Ashley) Grimes; her son-in-law, Patrick (Sherri) Drainville; her grandchildren, Elizabeth Drainville, Cristina Drainville, Scott Drainville, Hannah (Jesus) Gutierrez, Ashleigh (Dominic) Virgilio, Bailey Street & Cody Bogue, Sierra Street & Josh Stewart, Ethan Grimes and Bryce Grimes; her great-grandchildren, Noah Hagan, Marceline Hagan, Eisley Hagan, Liam McQuilling, Rylee Bogue, Marlie Bogue, and Jace Bogue along with close friends and family members.

We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to Lakeview Nursing Home and staff for taking care of her in her last few months when we couldn’t any longer, Vital Caring Hospice and staff for her last precious weeks, Dr. Olivia Hightower and staff, Dr. Lynn Leatherwood and staff and Riemann Funeral home. We thank you all for caring for our loved one.

A celebration of Janie's life will be held at a later date.
