Martha M. Gibson

September 28, 1946 — May 4, 2025

Gulfport, MS

Martha M. Gibson went to be with her Lord and Savior on May 4, 2025, in Gulfport, Mississippi, at the age of 78. Born on September 28, 1946, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Martha's life was an interesting one, filled with love, passion for knowledge, and fierce dedication to her family and it's rich history.

Martha was married to Bob Gibson, a 100% disabled Navy veteran, until his passing in 1991 . Martha's spirit and strength were indomitable until her passing.

As a proud mother, she profoundly influenced the lives of her three children: son Robert Clifford Powell Jr. and daughters Katryn Irene Laycox (Damon) and Melinda Marie Cooper (Adam). Her deep love for them was known, as well as she instilled the values of honesty, integrity, strength, and the importance of education within them. Martha balanced her family life with her thirst for knowledge, achieving a bachelor’s degree in history from Mississippi State University, graduating Suma Cum Laude. She was also a proud member of the Gamma Beta Phi Society and the Phi Alpha Theta History Society.

Martha's passion for reading and learning extended beyond her educational accomplishments; it defined her character. She loved sharing her fascination with history and politics with everyone around her, often engaging in thoughtful conversations that ignited the same passion in others.

She truly loved all her grandchildren: Adam and Maegan Cooper, Katie Cheney, Dee and Mary Moore. As well as her great grandchildren Dinah, Grayson, and Oliver.

Sister to David Michael Baxter Penney (Charline), John William Penney Jr. (Cathy), and Frances Louise Penney Davis (Wyatt), she often reflected on memories they shared, such as growing up as an "Army Brat" and living in places such as Germany, which she loved.

Martha is predeceased by her beloved husband Bob, her mother Edith Mae Strock Penney, her father John William Penney, her sister Edith "Irene" Penney Kinard Alexander. Each of these losses left a profound impact on her, but she carried their memories with grace and courage.

As we remember Martha, we celebrate her legacy of love, wisdom, and strength. Her relentless pursuit of knowledge and her deep-seated affection for her family will shine brightly in the lives she touched. A visitation will be held at St Matthew Lutheran Church in Gulfport, MS on May 30, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service there, and a graveside service at the Biloxi National Cemetery.

Martha M. Gibson's life was a beautiful testament to the power of love and the importance of family and education. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
