Marjorie Dee Hopkins West, age 91, of Hattiesburg and formerly of Gulfport, passed away on Monday, September 2, 2013, in Jackson.
Mrs. West graduated from Gulfport High School in 1939, where she was Salutatorian. She served as a Skipperette of the Gulfport Yacht Club and was Miss Gulfport Yacht Club from 1942 - 1962. She attended Ole Miss and was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority and the tennis team. She graduated from the University of Colorado in 1959, and received her master's degree in elementary education. She was the owner and teacher of a special education teaching center and volunteered at a suicide hotline program. She was a lifelong member of St. Peter's by the Sea Episcopal Church, Gulfport, and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Hattiesburg. She lived and traveled in the Air Force with her husband for 22 years. She loved to sing, dance, play tennis, and never met a stranger.
Mrs. West was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Marshall West; her parents, George Pearce Hopkins and Marjorie Selby Hopkins; her sister, Marian Hopkins; her brother, George P. Hopkins, Jr.; and two grandchildren, Audrey Elizabeth Ellzey and Ben Michael May.
She is survived by her children, Susan Hopkins West Mapp of Gulfport, a naturalist artist who received her master's degree in early childhood education, Sharon Anne West of Ojai, CA, a retired military psychiatrist, Pamela Marshall West of New Orleans, LA, an attorney, Patricia Menier West May of Clinton, MS, a systems analyst; her sister, Ann Hopkins Gresham of Indianola, MS; her eight grandchildren; and her four great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at Noon at St. Peter's by the Sea Episcopal Church, Gulfport, with a visitation for family and friends from 11:00 AM until the service. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Gulfport.
