Margie Irene Matthews Eaton, a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on June 10, 2025, in Long Beach, Mississippi, at the age of 91. Born on July 4, 1933, in Leavenworth, Kansas, Margie lived a life characterized by love, dedication, and service to her family and community. She resided in Kansas for most of her life retiring to the Mississippi Gulf Coast just 10 days prior to Hurricane Katrina.
Margie had a distinguished career as an auditor for the Veterans Administration, where her meticulous attention to detail and commitment to her work made a lasting impact. However, her true passion lay in music. Margie’s love for playing the piano was evident to all who knew her; she brought joy to many with her spirited performances, often described as having a “swing” that resonated deeply with her audience.
A devoted member of the Bel Aire Baptist Church, Margie served as the pianist until her health began to decline last year. Her musical contributions enriched the lives of her fellow parishioners. Not only did she share her talent through music, but she also took great pride in establishing a widow's ministry at the church, which has flourished with over 30 members, offering support and fellowship to many.
Margie cherished her family above all else and was surrounded by their love during her final moments. She is survived by her two children, Diana Butterfield (Gary) and Debra Eaton, who carry forward her legacy of love and dedication. Her spirit and warmth will continue to shine through her grandchildren, Rebecca Ritchey (Jonathan), Jeremiah, Joel, Reese, Micah Butterfield (Ashleigh), Emma, Callie, Samuel, Joseph Butterfield (Hillary), Bennett, Macy, Genevieve.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mattie Matthews; her husband, Curtis E. Eaton; and her daughter, Cynthia Eaton. Their memories remain cherished as Margie’s life was shaped by the love and bonds they shared.
Family and friends are invited to pay their respects and celebrate Margie’s remarkable life during visitation on June 18, 2025, from 8:30 AM to 9:30 AM, followed by a funeral service at 9:30 AM, both held at Riemann Family Funeral Home in Gulfport, Mississippi. A burial will take place at Biloxi National Cemetery at 11:00 AM.
Margie Irene Matthews Eaton leaves behind a legacy filled with love, music, and service, a testament to a life well lived. She will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Nahum 1:7
