Pass Christian

Margaret “Maggie” Medah Marquez-Wooten, age 57, of Pass Christian, passed away on July 9, 2022.

Maggie was born in Lake Providence, LA to Vincent F. Marquez, Jr., and Judy Lowery Marquez.  Maggie was a wonderful wife, mother, and a lifelong Catholic.   She was a graduate of St. Paul Elementary School in Pass Christian and Our Lady Academy in Bay St. Louis.   She earned her bachelor’s degree in recreational therapy from the University of Southern Mississippi and her master’s degree in social work from Tulane University.   After becoming a Licensed Master Social Worker, Maggie was hired by the Gulfport School District where she worked tirelessly to fulfill the needs of the students at West and Gaston Point Elementary Schools.   She left the school district to become a stay-at-home mom and home schooled her children; both of which went to Ole Miss on full ride scholarships.    Maggie was a founding member of the Alpha Phi Women’s Fraternity (Iota Omega) at Ole Miss with her daughter, Shannon.

Maggie was active in community theatre, most recently with the Bay St. Louis Little Theatre, and became a skilled and sought-after stage manager.   For the last years of her life, Maggie was a dedicated wildlife rehabber, specializing in raptors and waterbirds.   Due to her efforts, numerous bald eagles, hawks, owls, pelicans, great blue herons, opossums, and other wildlife were rescued, rehabilitated, and released back into the wild.   Maggie never quit being a social worker, and her kind heart and love for others touched countless people.  She truly left this world a better place than she found it.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her grandparents, Vincent F. Marquez, Sr., and Eglantine Marquez; her grandparents, Andrew “Bud” Lowery; Charles Herring, Sr. and Billie Herring; her great aunt, Dorothy Morgel; her uncles, William Henry Herring, and Charles Herring, Jr.; and her cousin, Lowery Rinicker.

She is survived by her husband, Eric Wooten; her children, Austin Wooten (Elizabeth), and Shannon Medah Wooten; her siblings, Tracy Marquez (Tiana), Bill Marquez (Emily), Lisa Gilbert (Joey), and Quentin Marquez (Dora); her nieces and nephews, Mallory Marquez, Phoebe Marquez, Claire Marquez, Jackson Wooten, Augustine Wooten, Jennie Vance (Marshall), Daniel Koberna (Kortney), Taylor Derr, and Kristen Owens (Jeremy).
