Lourie Higgins

d. October 3, 2025

Long Beach

Lourie Anna Higgins, age 78, passed away Friday, October 3, 2025 in Gulfport, MS.

Lourie was born on May 30, 1947 in Bogalusa, LA to the late Mattie L. Brown and Edward F. Brown. Lourie Higgins was a teacher, seamstress, cook, mother, and faithful Christian at Breaking the Barriers Church where she taught bible study. Lourie taught generations of Long Beach School District Students the art of home economics. If any of her alumni can sew, bake, or cook, it can certainly be attributed to her own talents. She was an educator for 30 years until her retirement, as Director of Food Services at Long Beach School District, in 2000.

At Lourie’s home, you were likely to have a favorite meal or dessert. There is much debate as to her greatest dish, but in truth they were all equally as wonderful. One son says italian cream cake, another german chocolate cake, and the last red velvet cake. Her granddaughter would argue that her bacon and grits couldn’t be beat, while her grandsons say bread and butter just tastes better at Grams’ house. However, we really know our favorite meals were not based on the content of our plates, but the loving hands that made them.

To know Lourie was to be well fed, well loved, and well versed in the word of God. She will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman A. Higgins; Parents, Mattie L. & Edward F. Brown; and step-sons, Gary Higgins and Steve Todd.

She is survived by her three sons, Charles “Chuck” Tinsley, Todd Tinsley, & Jeff Todd of Long Beach, MS; two step-daughters, Beth Higgins Prather (Max) of New Orleans, LA, Tina Baker (Paul) of Ponte Vedra, FL; six grandchildren, Lakelyn Tinsley, Brooks Tinsley, & Trenton Todd of Long Beach, MS, Lara Crutcher (Joe) of Fort Walton Beach, FL, Timothy Higgins (Lindsay) of New Orleans, LA, Ashley Baker Gheorghe (Radu) of Ponte Vedra, FL, Paul Landon Baker (Emily) of Lacey, WA, Stephen (Amanda) Todd; and six great-grandchildren, Saylor Crutcher, McKenzie Higgins, Ella Baker, Luca Gheorghe, Cassian Paul Baker, Lucille Anna Baker, and Bo Todd, and Weston Todd; respectively; and many cousins, friends, and loved ones.
