Linda St. Martin, age 67, of Gulfport, passed away on Friday, May 23, 2014.
She was born on Barksdale Air Force Base in Bossier City, Louisiana. She moved to Biloxi as a young child and lived on the coast most of her life. She is an alumna of the University of Mississippi. She worked in politics and social justice.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Sallie Ashley Watts Brown and father W.E. Brown.
She is survived by her children, Lt. Col. Hugh B. St. Martin and wife Rachel, and Ashley A. St. Martin, siblings Frankie Slowey, Gene Brown, and Kim Baldwin, grandson Hugh III, and many nieces and nephews.
Linda St. Martin served as a guiding light, leading the way for equal justice for all. Linda focused the spotlight on the issues at hand, never on herself. She never asked others to do what she would not do. Linda was a passionate, tireless crusader for the environment and social justice. Linda served on the Board of the Steps Coalition, a social justice coalition, the Board of the MS Chapter Sierra Club, was a delegate to the National Board of Council of Leaders, and was extremely active in local and state politics. Privately she enjoyed cooking, gardening, and sewing for family and friends.
Services will be Thursday, May 29, 2014 at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer at 10:00 am with visitation from 9 - 10 am. Following the service at the church friends of Linda are invited to join the family at 12 noon on the Ship Island Excursion to scatter her ashes.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to the Sierra Club.
