Linda Mignor

d. December 24, 2017

Linda Mignor, age 76, passed away peacefully in her sleep on December 24.
She was preceded in death by her husband, of 46 years, Gene Mignor, parents, John and Irene Martin and infant granddaughter Kathryn Grimes.
Mrs. Mignor is survived by her son Kevin (Terrie) Mignor, daughter, Michelle (Matthew) Grimes and five granddaughters; Chelsey Douglas, Jordan and Michaela McLeod and Anne and Mary Grimes.  She is also survived by her brother John (Roseanne) Martin of Portsmouth, RI; her sister Mary Ann Martin of Newport, R.I and her sister Cecilia (Martin) VanHof of Tiverton, R.I.
Mrs. Mignor was born in 1941 in Middletown, R.I. She was the second of four children to John and Irene Martin.  She grew up a confident and independent young lady who excelled in school.  She started her academic career at Newport Hospital School of Nursing and earned her Bachelors of Nursing at Salve Regina College in Newport R.I.  Nursing was a vocation for Mrs. Mignor and she spent many years practicing across the full spectrum of clinical care.  Her greatest passion was educating future nurses. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing from LSU, the school from which she would ultimately earn her Doctorate. She was active in the MS Nurses Association and served on numerous academic committees.  Mrs. Mignor received many honors, including the USM Excellence in Teaching Award and induction into the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society in Nursing.
She spent the majority of her career as a professor of nursing at the University of Southern Mississippi, Gulf Park Campus. She was widely published and advanced the field through grant writing and speaking at conferences.  She received the most joy from educating students in the class room, but she also excelled as a leader at the college, and at one point served as the interim dean of the College of Nursing.
Mrs. Mignor was a 40 year resident of Long Beach and was passionate about community service. She volunteered with the Long Beach Historical Society, Long Beach Chamber of Commerce, American Heart Association, Pink Hearts, South MS Alzheimers Association and the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art. She was especially devoted to her church, St. Thomas, and spent many years serving on the condolence committee and assisting in the office.
She had a love of books and adored reading to her granddaughters.  She was active in her book club and enjoyed playing cards and dominos with her many close friends.  Linda had a fondness for nature, particularly birdwatching, and her binoculars were always near by.   She delighted in traveling with her husband and family, visiting Europe, Mexico, Alaska, Hawaii and the Azores.  She especially enjoyed returning to New England and her childhood home of Rhode Island.
