Leo Lamar Adams, age 83 and a resident of Gulfport, died on Thursday, May 14, 2009, in Gulfport.
Mr. Adams was a native of Marion, and had been a resident of Gulfport for the past 42 years.
He served in World War II as a Navy gunner on several Merchant Marine ships in the Atlantic and Pacific theaters of operation. After serving in the Navy, he joined the US Army and served with the Occupation Forces in Germany. He was honorably discharged in 1949. That fall, he married the late Catherine Foresteen (Tina) Stephens. The following year, he began a 29-year career as a civil service employee, working at Brookley Air Force Base, Mobile, AL, and at the Gulfport Seabee Base. He retired from the civil service in 1980. His life reflected many of the qualities shown by those World War II veterns described in Tom Brokaw's book, The Greatest Generation. He loved his country, his family, and his garden.
Mr. Adams is preceded in death by his parents, Andrew & Zenobia Parker Adams; his wife, Catherine Foresteen Adams; his daughter, Barbara Jo Adams; his brother, Robert Adams and his sister, Marie Adams Hayes.
He is survived by his children, David Charles (Patricia) Stephens of Charlotte, NC, Debra Jane (Daniel) Ross of Columbia, and Terry Lamar (Toni) Adams of Gulfport; his brother, J.W. (Mildred) Adams of Montgomery, AL; his sister, Annie Adams Parker of Meridian; 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Tuesday, May 19, 2009, at 11:00am at the Riemann Family Funeral Home, 11280 Three Rivers Road in Gulfport, where friends may visit one hour prior to the service.
