Larry Gressett Smith

Larry G. Smith, age 85, of Gulfport, Mississippi, passed away on February 26, 2026. He was born on August 31, 1940, in Union, Mississippi, and moved to Gulfport at the age of twelve, where he would build a life rooted in family, service, and community.

Larry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, June Warden Smith; his parents, Gressett and Waulite Smith; his sister, Margaret Jeannette Beben; and his brother, David Smith.

He is survived by his children: Lance Smith (Vanessa) of Biloxi; Sean Smith (Cathy) of Gulfport; and Susan Smith Gibert of Mandeville, Louisiana. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Theresa Smith.

Larry’s greatest pride and joy were his grandchildren: Christian Smith (Jennifer), Maddie Ransonet (Lance), Nathan Smith (Sophie), Collin Smith (Claire), Caroline Smith, Lola Pizzetta, Brent Gibert, and Bryce Gibert, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.

Larry attended Gulfport High School, where he played trumpet in the marching band, graduating in 1958. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1965 as a member of an Air Sea Rescue Squadron.

Following his military service, Larry worked in the finance industry for over 25 years. After retiring, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to own several small businesses, including Southern Fire and Safety Equipment Company and Sweet Water House Antiques Mall.

Larry was a devoted fan of the New Orleans Saints and Mississippi State Bulldogs and rarely missed a game. He was an avid collector of vinyl records and vintage hi-fi equipment, a hobby that brought him great joy and reflected his appreciation for music and nostalgia.

Above all, Larry loved his family. He was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren, and nothing brought him greater happiness than spending time with them. His presence, wisdom, and love will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
