Katie took her place in the Kingdom of Heaven 9 September, 2016, with family by her side. She was predeceased by the love of her life and husband of 44 years, Carlos in 1987; her parents, James P. and Ruby Frances Neatherland and a beloved daughter-in-law, Bessie Langston. She is survived by three sons: Carlos Jr. (Nell) of Ripley, MS; James B. (Joni) of Murphy, NC and Lucky (Regina) of Gulfport, MS. A proud Grandmother of eight, Steve (Kathy), Cynthia, James Randall, Katherine Stultz (Paul), Glenn, Jonathan, Melanie, Stephanie Tapp (Ryan). A Great Grandmother to nine amazing great grandchildren.
She was graduated from then Hillman College, Clinton, MS and was awarded a B.A. degree from Mississippi College in Clinton, MS. Having given birth to Carlos Jr. after Carlos departed for the US Army and service in Burma during WWII, she began the task of teaching her children how to be responsible citizens. She never stopped doing this, often shaking her head when something was said that didn't strike her as just right. Mother seldom, if ever, got angry but then she didn't have to. Just the shake of that red hair and we boys knew to take another try at whatever it was we were doing. The worst words she could say: ""Just wait until your Daddy gets home!"" If she ever takes a respite from singing praises to her Lord and Savior, we suspect she may ask if the records of Heaven contain any information about who broke her brand new tube of lipstick. ""Lord knows"" was often used when the broken lipstick mystery came up in conversation.
Katie was a long-time devoted member of the New Hope Baptist Church where she served in many capacities, among them Sunday School Teacher, pianist, and church clerk. She and Carlos built the church's first organ from a kit. Could she do anything she decided to do? You bet!
Katie was a superb cook (just look at the boys, they didn't miss any meals!). Her Company Rice and Egg Custard Pies were enjoyed by all that frequented the many meals at the New Hope Baptist Church. She often cooked a dozen of the ""egg"" pies as they were called and distributed them around the New Hope community; a well -deserved nickname - ""Katie Pie!""
A talented counted cross-stitch artist, her prized gifts of intricate cross stitched samplers to newly marrieds and new parents celebrating their special events grace many walls in the community.
A service of celebration of her life will be held at the New Hope Baptist Church, 17430 Landon Road, Gulfport, MS on 12 September, 2016. Visitation is from 9:30 until 11:00 and will be followed by the celebration at 11:00. Interment will be at Lakewood Cemetery, Clinton, MS where her earthly body will rest beside that of Carlos for eternity.
Our sincere thanks and deepest appreciation go to Dr. Blanks and the entire staff of the Lakeview Nursing Center for the extraordinary care they provided for our mother. The staff is composed of wonderful, concerned caregivers that did everything just right. Thank You!
Katie was an ardent supporter of the Gideons International, and the family has requested that in lieu of flowers, a donation of Gideon Bibles be made in recognition of Katie's life as a servant of God.
