Julius Quintin Merrifield, Sr., age 84, of Gulfport, MS, passed away on Thursday, February 16, 2017.
Mr. Merrifield was born and raised in Knoxville, TN, where he joined the U.S. Air Force as a teenager in 1950. After his service in the U.S.A.F., he joined and later retired as a U.S. Navy Seabee. His military career began just prior to Korea and took him to North Africa, Argentia, NFLD, Cuba (during the Missile Crisis), the White House under John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson, and Vietnam from 1968-1969. After his military career, he worked at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA, as Assistant Chief Engineer and retired in 1988.
Some of Mr. Merrifield's accomplishments included the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star, Sharpshooter Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with FMF Combat Operations Insignia, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Cuba), and Four Good Conduct Medals.
He loved traveling in his motorhome with his wife, enjoyed square dancing, coin collecting, jogging (ran the Marine Corps Marathon in 1976), watching and cataloging old westerns, and the daily lunch buffet with friends. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Sterling and Ida Mae Evans Merrifield; sisters, Ida, Ruby, and Noreen; and his brothers, James, Tommy, Walter, Jr., and Chester.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Naomi Merrifield of Gulfport; children, Lori (Daniel) Richardson of Denver, CO, Karen (Edward) Atkinson of Fredericksburg, VA, and Julius Q. Merrifield, Jr. of Mechanicsburg, PA; sister, Geneva Jarmula of Greentown, PA; grandchildren, J.C. Richardson of Columbia Falls, MT, Danielle Richardson of Las Vegas, NV, Travis Atkinson of Winter Garden, FL, and Ashley Merrifield of Gaithersburg, MD; great-grandchildren, Jaiden Chase and Xander Chase of Gaithersburg, MD; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Graveside ceremonies with full military honors rendered by the United States Navy will be on Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at Biloxi National Cemetery in Biloxi, MS, at 11:00 a.m. RIEMANN FAMILY FUNERAL HOME, Gulfport, MS is serving the family, and memories may be shared at www.riemannfamily.com.
